Women’s Soccer
What a weekend it was for the Tigers women’s soccer team as they came away with two key road wins. They put on two stellar performances that started with a 7-0 victory over the University of Moncton on Saturday. Michelle Yates opened the scoring in the 17th minute in what would become her first of three goals on the day. Victoria Parkinson added two of her own, and Elise Bilodeau and Taylor Goodwin also added a goal apiece. Katie Morgan made two saves for the shutout.
On Sunday, the Tigers faced the UNB Varsity Reds, who entered the game in first place in the AUS with a 6-0-2 record. Scarlett Smith notched the lone goal in the 35th minute which would prove to be the difference as the Tigers held on for a 1-0 victory. Their 5-3-1 record is good for fourth in the AUS and puts them just four points out of first place.
The Tigers will be back in action on October 17 when they face the Acadia Axewomen, who are tied with UNB for first place in the AUS. The teams played to a scoreless draw in their first meeting this season.
Men’s Soccer
Bezick Evraire netted two goals and James Nearing added another one late in the game as the Tigers cruised past the University of Moncton on Saturday 3-1. Keeper Tristen Leopold looked strong in net, making seven saves in the victory. It was a scary moment for the Tigers when striker Stephen Wax took an elbow to the face which fractured his zygomatic arch.
On Sunday, they faced the first-place UNB Varsity Reds, who were 7-0-1 going into the match. Although the Tigers fought hard and played well, Oliver Jones snuck one past Leopold in extra-time to give the Varsity Reds a 1-0 victory as time expired. The Tigers will be back on the field on October 17 when they head to Wolfville to take on the Acadia Axemen.
Cross Country
The women’s team ran away with the victory at the University of Moncton Invitational as they finished with only 22 points on the day. The foursome of Maddy Crowell, Kayte Kowal, Emily Ferguson and Jenna MacDonald finished second, third, fourth and fifth respectively to secure the win for the Tigers. Abby Llewellyn rounded out the top ten for the Tigers finishing in ninth, while Hannah Ascough, Sara Lausch and Emma Gilliam finished 11th, 15th and 23rd respectively.
The men’s team had a strong showing at the UdeM Invitational but they came just short of the victory as their 35-point performance was just three points off the lead. Matt McNeil led the Tigers with a third place finish, while Matthias Mueller, Will Russell and Graeme Wach also finished in the top ten with fifth, sixth and ninth place finishes, respectively. Angus MacIntosh rounded out the Tigers with a 14th place finish.
Men’s Hockey
The Tigers finished up their pre-season with a pair of games south of the border in New England. On Saturday, they faced UMass-Amherst and couldn’t recover from an early first period 3-0 deficit as they fell 5-3. Steven Johnston had a goal and an assist for the Tigers, while Andrew Lagan added a late third period tally. Wendell Vye made 50 saves in the loss.
It was a similar story on Sunday as the Tigers faced the UConn Huskies as the Tigers got down 3-0 early on. JP Harvey scored late in the third period for the Tigers, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 3-1 to end the pre-season 0-5. Newcomer Corbin Boes made 28 saves in the loss for the Tigers, who will open up their regular season at home against Acadia on October 11 at 7 p.m.
Men’s Basketball
The new-look men’s basketball team, which features eight rookies, travelled to Toronto for a pre-season tournament this weekend. They dropped their first game against the CIS top-five ranked Ryerson Rams 97-75. The Tigers trailed by ten at halftime, but the Rams pulled away in the second half. Devon Stedman led the Tigers with 17 points and seven boards while Sven Stammberger added 12 points.
On Saturday night they faced former Tigers coach John Campbell and the University of Toronto. The Tigers held a one-point lead going into halftime, and their defensive intensity in the second half carried them to an 85-77 victory. Stedman was again strong with 16 points while veteran guard Jarred Reid added 15 of his own. Rookie Sean Dodds dropped 12 points in just his second game with the Tigers.
On Sunday, the Tigers ran out of gas against the University of York and let a one-point halftime lead slip away and York powered past the Tigers in the second half after a dominant third quarter on their way to a 96-76 vitory. Stedman again led the way in scoring for the Tigers with 16 points.
