Women’s Soccer
The Tigers came out on top last Wednesday in the second round of the battle of Halifax against the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Rookie Jensen Hudder netted her first two goals of her career, and fifth-year Michelle Yates added a beautiful strike from outside the 18 yard box to give the Tigers a 3-0 win.
It was a tough weekend as they dropped another game against the Cape Breton Capers at home on Saturday. Tigers keeper Rachel Hunt made six saves in the loss for the Tigers, who couldn’t come back after the Capers converted on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Victoria Parkinson nearly tied it late in the second half, but her shot rang off the crossbar as the Tigers lost 1-0.
The Tigers now sit in sixth place in the AUS with a 3-3-1 record. They’ll be on the field again on Saturday when they travel to face l’Universite de Moncton, who are 0-6-1 on the season and sit second-last in the AUS.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s team suffered a tough loss at the hands of the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Wednesday as they dropped the game 2-1. After allowing a goal early in the first half, Bezick Evraire tied the game on a penalty kick, but the Huskies answered right back with a goal of their own just two minutes later as they went on to win 2-1.
The Tigers ran into a red-hot Cape Breton Capers on Saturday afternoon, as Ian Greedy piled on two goals for the Capers in the first half. Tigers keeper Tristen Leopold did all he could to keep the game close, including a diving save late in the first half to keep the game at 2-0 going into halftime.
With the game at 3-0 late in the second half, Ryan Lewars fired one back the Capers keeper to cut the lead to two, but Ian Greedy scored in the dying minutes to make it 4-1 for the Capers.
The Tigers move down to fifth in the AUS with a 2-3-2 record and will try and right the ship when they face l’Universite de Moncton (1-3-1) next Saturday at 3:15pm.
Women’s Volleyball
The Tigers got off to a great start as they finished at 3-1 at the Russell Investments Dalhousie Women’s Volleyball Invitational this weekend. They started on Friday night with a dominant 3-0 win over the Acadia Axewomen (25-13, 25-12, 25-15). Anna Dunn-Suen showed everyone that she’s a force to be reckoned with, as she recorded 15 kills on the night on her way to being named player of the game.
The Tigers started with another dominant win early Saturday when they beat l’Universite de Moncton 3-0. It was a different story later in the day as the Tigers fell 3-1 to the Memorial Sea-Hawks (28-26, 25-23, 23-25, 25-14). They got down early in the first two sets and couldn’t recover. It was a bright spot for two Tigers newcomers, as Mieke Dumont and Alexandra Hudson combined for 20 kills in the loss.
They handed the Saint Mary’s Huskies their first loss on the weekend on Sunday with a 3-1 victory. After dropping the first set 27-25, the Tigers rallied back to win the next three sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-18). Dunn-Suen was at the top of her game again, as she powered 16 kills past the Huskies.
After finishing the game with 12 digs, Tigers libero Marisa Mota was named the tournament MVP while Abby Czenze and Anna Dunn-Suen were named to the all-star team. The Tigers will be back in action on October 24 when they head to Montreal for the first AUS-RSEQ interlock event of the year.
Men’s Hockey
The Tigers had another tough loss as their pre-season woes continue. They lost to the Acadia Axemen 7-2 in their final pre-season game in Liverpool, NS. The Tigers head south of the border to take on UMass Lowell on Saturday and the University of Connecticut on Sunday. They will begin their regular season against the Axemen on October 11 at the Halifax Forum at 7:00pm.
