Women’s Basketball

The Tigers hosted the CIS No. 1 Saint Mary’s Huskies on Wednesday night at the Dalplex, looking to finish above .500 in the first half of the season.

After the Tigers jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, the Huskies went on big runs to start the second and third quarters and never took their foot off the gas pedal, defeating the Tigers 87-62.

Courtney Thompson and Robbi Daley led the way for the Tigers with 13 points apiece, while Tessa Stammberger added 11 points and three boards.

With the loss, they now sit in fifth place in the AUS with a 3-4 record.

Men’s Basketball

It was yet another heart-breaking loss for the Tigers on Wednesday night against Saint Mary’s as yet another game slipped out of their fingertips in the final seconds.

The Tigers were down nine after halftime, but outscored the Huskies 25-13 in the third quarter and led by three going into the final frame.

Going into the final minutes, the Huskies hit a deep three that gave them the 68-67 lead. After a hectic scramble for the loose ball, Devon Stedman was fouled and headed to the line for two free throws.

The first shot went off, rattled all around the rim, and the Dalplex fell silent as the ball rolled out.

Still just needing one point to tie the game, Stedman’s second shot clanged off the rim again, and the Huskies would ice the game with free throws to defeat the Tigers 70-67.

Stedman had 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Tigers in the loss, while Simon Marr had nine points to go along with 7 rebounds. Tigers leading scorer Kashrell Lawrence was held to six points going 3-6 from the field.

The loss drops the Tigers to 1-6 on the season and seventh in the AUS. They will head into the holiday break trying to regroup and fight their way into a playoff spot in the second half of the season.

Women’s Hockey

The Tigers suffered a 4-3 loss to the Mount Allison Mounties on Thursday night, dropping them to 4-8-1 on the season and sixth place in the AUS.

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead when Fielding Montgomery scored her fourth goal of the year just four minutes in to put the Tigers up 1-0. The Mounties responded with two straight goals to lead 2-halfway through the second period, and

After an early third period goal by the Mounties, Marita Alfieri scored off a feed from Montgomery to trim the gap to 4-3 with only two minutes left, but it was too little too late and the Tigers couldn’t get the equalizer as time expired.

Men’s Hockey

It was another tough week for Chris Donnelly’s squad.

On Wednesday night they faced the Saint Mary’s Huskies, and had one of their roughest outings of the season, despite outshooting their opponents 35-32.

Bobby Nadeau allowed five goals on 15 shots and the Tigers trailed 5-0 after the first period. Andrew Langan got the Tigers on the board just one minute into the second period, but the Huskies added another goal only four minutes later to push the lead to 6-1. Andrew Wigginton would add two goals for the Tigers, but it wasn’t enough as the Huskies went on to win 9-3.

On Friday night, they took on the UNB Varsity Reds at the Halifax Forum, but couldn’t seem to find their scoring touch. The game was full of back-and-forth action that saw both teams fire 39 shots on net, but the Tigers couldn’t find the back of the net, while the Varsity Reds got three goals past Wendell Vye.

The Tigers went 0-4 on the powerplay on the night, and failed to capitalize on their many scoring chances.

On Saturday night, The Tigers faced the University of Moncton Aigles Bleus. Fabian Walsh scored his second goal of the season just 1:42 into the first period to jump-start the Tigers offense. Moncton rattled off three straight goals before Chris Ivanko sniped one with a minute left in the second period to make it 3-2.

Moncton would add another goal mid-way through the third period, adding an empty-netter and the Tigers would go on to lose 5-2.

The Tigers now head into the holiday break with a 1-12-1 record and sit last in the AUS.
