Corey Kirkhus - October 9, 2012
Over Thanksgiving weekend Tigers athletes were hard at work in exhibition basketball, hockey and volleyball games as well as a cross country meet in Wolfville, N.S.
Calgary 79 @ DAL 66
Last Thursday the Tigers faced the University of Calgary in their first test of the season at Dalplex. During their first exhibition match the women showed promise on the court, with Dalhousie’s Keisha Brown scoring an outstanding 27 points for the black and gold. Despite a strong effort, the Tigers lost to the Dinos 79-66. With the first preseason match out of the way, the women’s basketball team hosts the annual Subway Centennial Tournament this weekend at Dalplex and will battle Acadia, Saint Mary’s and Windsor.
Men and Women’s Cross Country
On Saturday Acadia hosted the Tigers and other AUS athletes in the third cross country meet of the season. Dal once again had a strong showing, with veteran Holly van Gestel taking second place in the women’s 5km. On the men’s side David Burlock and Dantez Manchester led the team finishing in 15th and 16th place respectively. With one meet left before the Subway AUS Championship in Halifax, the athletes are beginning to focus on the most important race of the season.
SMU 2 @ DAL 0
This season the cross-town rivalry between Dal and SMU will be taken to a new level with both teams calling the Halifax Forum home this winter. Last Thursday the Tigers came up short in a 2-0 exhibition loss to the Huskies, but will have another shot at Saint Mary’s on Friday, October 12 in their season opener. With both teams vying for control on home ice, it promises to be an exciting season for Halifax hockey fans.
Manitoba @ DAL 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-22); Manitoba @ DAL 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-9)
The Tigers hosted the Manitoba Bison in exhibition volleyball over Thanksgiving weekend in their first two games of the season. Despite losing both matches, Dal pushed each set within just a few points proving their tenacity and resilience. The men hit the road at the end of the month for a tour through Quebec to play against Montreal, Sherbrooke, and Laval before their home opener November 9 against UNB at the Dalplex.
