After a month off from regular season play, the Tigers were eager to begin 2012 and continue the battle towards the AUS championships.
Basketball
In Newfoundland over the weekend, the women’s basketball team played two games against Memorial. The fourth-place Tigers battled hard, but the second place Sea-Hawks held on for a 85-68 win. Veteran Cailin Crosby led Dal with 22 points. Looking to redeem themselves, the black and gold came out strong in Sunday’s game, but fell short by only two points losing 85-83. Rachael Harrison, Anna von Maltzahn, and Courtney Thompson each banked 16 points, while Ms. Crosby added 12 points and five rebounds.
With the Rod Shoveller Memorial Tournament bronze medal under their belts, the men’s basketball team were ready to get back into AUS action. In the first game against Memorial, Casey Fox led the Tigers to an 89-76 victory with 24 points while Robert Nortmann (21), William Yengue (13), and Ritchie Kanza Mata (12) also put on a strong performance. Sunday’s game saw Dal come out on top again, defeating the Sea-Hawks 92-82. Mr. Yengue was top scorer for the Tigers with 18 points and five rebounds. Alexander Arthur added 15 points, while Stephen Lopez and Mr. Nortmann had 14 and 13, respectively.
The basketball teams will be back on the court this Saturday, Jan. 14 hosting a double header against Saint Mary’s. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m., with the men’s game to follow at 8 p.m. It’s residence student night and one lucky student will get to shoot for $5,000 in the Shoot for Tuition promotion at the men’s game, while the women’s team will be hosting their annual fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Atlantic Region (CBCF, Atlantic).
Hockey
It was a weekend of comebacks for the women’s hockey team, as they hosted UdeM and STU. Saturday’s game against Moncton went into overtime after player of the game Jocelyn LeBlanc scored with less than a minute left in the third period. In overtime Moncton capitalized on a Tigers penalty for a 4-3 win. Ms. LeBlanc had two goals and Dal’s other goal was scored by Fielding Montgomery. On Sunday, the Tigers got off to a slow start against the St. Thomas Tommies and were down 2-0 by the start of the third period. In an incredible effort, the black and gold scored four goals in the third period to win the game 4-3. Miranda McMillan, Sarah Robichaud, Rebecca Smyth, and Jocelyn LeBlanc collected goals for Dal. The team will host StFX this Friday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. in their annual CBCF, Atlantic fundraising event.
The men’s hockey team also went 1-1 at home this weekend. With Bobby Nadeau in net on Friday night, the Tigers shut out St. Thomas 1-0. Dal’s lone goal was scored on a power play in the third period by Brett Theberge, assisted by Jacob Johnston and Brett Plouffe. Pierre-Alexandre Vandall was named the Subway player of the game. On Saturday, the black and gold took on the UdeM Aigles Bleus and were able to hold them off until the third period, when Moncton pulled away to win 5-1. Patrick Daley scored for the Tigers, assisted by Brett Theberge and Jordan Villeneuve-Gagne. The team will travel to New Brunswick this weekend for a rematch with STU and UdeM.
Volleyball
The women’s volleyball team was on the road over the holiday and captured the title at the Brandon Conferences of Canada Challenge. The women travel to CBU and StFX this coming weekend to restart their AUS regular season play.
