Let's talk about school spirit

Dal News Staff - March 11, 2010

There's a lot to cheer about at Dalhousie. By way of example, the men's basketball team heads east to Sydney, Cape Breton this weekend to defend its AUS title while the men's volleyball team travels westward to compete for a national title. As well, with talk about a new club team, it looks like football could soon be played again at Dalhousie.

But school spirit still seems to be an issue here. What would get you excited about attending Dalhousie? What do you suggest to promote a little more waving of the black and gold? Start our discussion, and remember, go team!

This might not be very relevant but I have to say , lecture rooms in Dalhousie kill me ... WE SERIOUSLY NEED SOME SUNLIGHT TO GET INTO THESE ROOMS ... what happened to windows? those brick rooms are just too depressing...
Having buildings that are more like a state of the art school rather than a dump would help (sexton campus)... It is embarrasing really
I reject the premise that school spirit can only be shown through athletics. Although athletics provides a good outlet for school spirit it is not the only place where school spirit can manifest itself.
Look at Orientation Week, there's little athletics but great school spirit is fostered. Narrowing the idea that school spirit can only be found in athletics leaves out a great number of Dalhousie students who have no interest in athletics. If Dal really wants school spirit to thrive, don't leave out students by focusing on one part of the school.
How about making games free to non-Dal students? Or handing out free tickets/adveritsing for games/other events during the first week of classes so students know about it in advance.
Seriously, get a football program.
There is actually a group of students who have started a Dal Football Club. I believe it was the cover story on last week's Gazette. Search 'Dalhousie Football' on facebook for more info!
Between work, school, volunteering, exercise, and a social life I simply don't have the time. More importantly I would rather play sports than watch others play. Also If you want more people sporting Dal digs drop the price! School is expensive enough, if you want us to give the school free advertising drop the price of Dalhousie apparel.

I like the advertising and free ticket ideas though, that's what got me to dal hockey games when I was a youngin'
