Tragedy at Virginia Tech

Dal News Staff - April 16, 2007

The Dalhousie community is shocked by the senseless violence at Virginia Tech. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims, and their families, friends and colleagues in this dark hour.

We are united in our sorrow and outrage. We are united in our determination that universities and colleges must always stand for reason and humanity in defiance of such inhuman brutality. We will not give in to despair. We reaffirm our values.

The flags at Dalhousie are lowered to half-mast in memory of the victims. Please note that our Counselling Services are available to anyone personally affected by this (located at 6136 University Avenue, telephone  494-2081).

Nothing can justify what has happened at Virginia. This senseless act did not create a martyr, nor the desired impact which the individual was seeking. It has instead shown to the entire world that the strength and courage to continue on can be found in the most difficult of adversities, even in the smallest of towns.
The Virginia Tech website now has a page listing the names of hundreds of colleges and universities across the continent and the world, that have offered condolences and support in the last few days. And so I have followed a link to Dalhousie, my alma mater. As a Tech faculty and an alum of Dal, I am deeply moved by your affirmation and expression of solidarity with our grieving community here, and I am especially touched to learn that the Canadian flag is flying at half-mast on campus. I thank you from the depths of my heart. Together we will prevail.
The tragedy at Virginia Tech is indeed a shock. I join the Dalhousie community to sympathize with the affected families, while praying God to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss. May God grant the departed souls eternal rest. Amen.
