The Canadian Library Association/Association canadienne des bibliothèques is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2014 CLA/Alan MacDonald Mentorship Award is Ms. Terri Tomchyshyn, on assignment from the Library as the Union Liaison Officer in Change Management, Department of National Defense. This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to mentoring activities either within their workplace or in an association.

Ms. Tomchyshyn has dedicated herself to the development of emerging information professionals in her own workplace, in the National Capital Region, and across Canada, by helping them realize their potential through empowerment.

This CLA award is named after Alan MacDonald, who was a natural mentor. Always positive, always receptive to new ideas, always ready to see potential, he inspired those around him to strive for and realize their dreams. As beneficiaries of Alan’s spirit, the founders of the Canadian Electronic Library are proud to sponsor this award. Terri herself benefited from the mentorship of Alan MacDonald and has chosen to continue his legacy throughout her own career.

Terri has helped Master of Library Science students gain valuable skills and aptitudes through the co-op program she implemented within the Government of Canada. Always happy to lend an ear she provided guidance and reinforcement so mentees could move swiftly along the learning curve and mature their library/information skills.

An active member of CLA, Terri was instrumental in initiating the New Librarians Interest Group and was a key player in starting the Student to CLA program. The sustainability of her mentorship is evident in her continuing involvement with ensuring new and emerging librarians actualize their potential. Terri has continued Alan MacDonald’s grand tradition of active engagement and transformation through mentoring. Her impact on new librarians is heart-felt and will be remembered well into the future.

The CLA/Alan MacDonald Mentorship Award will be presented on Thursday, May 29, 2014 during the Opening Ceremonies of the CLA 2014 National Conference and Trade Show at the Victoria Conference Centre.
