Ever wonder why the patterns on a giraffe's hide are hexagonal? John Rumsey and his co-authors, in their paper titled "Logarithmic Expansions and the Stability of Periodic Patterns of Localized Spots for Reaction-Diffusion Systems in R^2" published in the Journal of Nonlinear Science, give very strong support for the conjecture that the regular hexagon is the most stable of cell shapes on a two-dimensional surface. This work was also presented at the SIAM PDE meeting in Orlando, Florida, in Dec. 2013.
