A year of success for Rowe School at case competitions

Posted by Rowe School of Business on May 27, 2014 in Students

Success in the arena of case competitions is adding to the prestige of the Rowe School of Business nationally and internationally.

“During the 2013/2014 academic year, over 150 Rowe students competed in twelve major external competitions. Five of these were internationally recognized, with the majority having national reach. We are extremely proud to have placed in the top 3 in over 80% of these competitions,” said Greg Hebb, Director of the Rowe School of Business.

Case competitions have become an important component of development for our students. Through these competitions, our students are able to show off their skills, developing solutions to complex issues with limited time and resources. Although every competition has its own unique twist, typically a group of four students are given a three-hour time limit with no external resources to develop a plan to solve a complex problem. Solutions are then presented to a panel of top-notch judges, who determine a winner.

The skill sets developed during training and competition will be crucial throughout their careers. Students must work under pressure in an intimate team setting to solve a multitude of issues in a clear, concise fashion. Many teams practice with their faculty advisors for a minimum of 20 hours over a few weeks. Students are able to form a strong bond with faculty members and each other, creating lifelong bonds.

Case competitions are made possible by funding provided by alumni through the Annual Fund, the Rowe Gift Fund, and many of our generous employer partners.

Students are able to get involved with case competitions starting in their first semester, and there are lots of opportunities to get involved. Stay tuned to your society newsletters for more information in fall 2014.
