Posted by Stephanie Rogers on April 16, 2015 in International News, News

Shelby Jamieson has been selected as the first Queen Elizabeth Scholar (QES) from the Faculty of Agriculture.

As a QE Scholar, Shelby will travel to Kampala, Uganda this summer to work with the “Southern and Eastern African Trade, Information and Negotiations Institute” (SEATINI) around topics of food security.  She will join other Dalhousie QE Scholars traveling to and from Commonwealth countries, with placements facilitated through the International Development Studies Department, Marine Affairs Program, and Global Health Office.

Shelby is completing her B. Sc. (Agr.) in the Department of Business and Social Sciences.  Throughout her time at the Faculty of Agriculture she has served as an international representative for the Faculty of Agriculture including as an English as an Additional Language instructor at the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in Fuzhou, China, as well as during a semester abroad studying at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in Ås, where she also served as the Secretary for the International Student Union.

Shelby has recently been awarded an Export Development Canada International Business scholarship recognizing her leadership and experiences abroad.

At the Faculty of Agriculture, Shelby has completed the SAIL Certificate (student leadership), served as the 2014 Shinerama Chair, a Student Peer Tutor, an International Orientation Leader and as an Engage Colchester-Truro Youth Forum Facilitator, as well as volunteering with Canadian Ag Literacy Week.  Shelby has also been a member of the Agrology club and a runner in the Cross Country Club.

We are confident Shelby will be an excellent ambassador for Dalhousie as one of its QE Scholars.

The QE Scholar program is the result of the “Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship” program, which is funded by government, private, and public sectors.  A new initiative, the program is intended to lay the foundation for the next generation of entrepreneurs, public servants, community leaders and academics with innovative minds and a sense of commitment to Canada and the Commonwealth.

Dalhousie will send and receive QE Scholars from 2015 until 2017.  For further information on Faculty of Agriculture QE Scholar opportunities, please contact Kendra Mellish, Student Mobility Officer at kendra.mellish@dal.ca.
