Oceans are a $5 billion industry in Nova Scotia, employing more than 60,000 workers and over 1,000 local researchers. Whether through helping local small- or medium-sized enterprises solve industrial research problems or spinning out university research into new companies, Dalhousie is developing new commercial opportunities resulting from our oceans research and expertise.

Halifax Marine Research Institute

Dalhousie is taking a leadership role in establishing the Halifax Marine Research Institute (HMRI), with the support of industry and government partners. Combining local strength with global reach, the HMRI exists to align our region's oceans research assets for the benefit of the region and the marine technology sector. Its aim is to increase the scale, quality, internationalization and impact of marine research. By applying world-class science to public policy and commercial applications, it will help build a growing and vibrant cluster of marine technology companies in our region, one with strong commercialization capacity and supported by an active research ecosystem.

Aquatron Laboratory

A unique world-class research facility, Dalhousie’s Aquatron Laboratory supports projects from university, industry and government. It hosts more than 4,600 m2 of research space including 17 wet labs, a 640 m3 Pool Tank and the 10 m deep Tower Tank. Its capacity is being increased thanks to a significant investment by Trojan Technologies Inc. of Ontario, building four new tanks to support expanded research and testing of large scale ballast water remediation.
