About Oceans Week
Powerful opportunities

Dalhousie Oceans Week (June 1 to 8) celebrates the powerful role and the incredible potential that the oceans sector has in our economy, environment and culture.
Home to groundbreaking research and a strong cluster of emerging oceans industries, Halifax is quickly becoming a globally-recognized hub of oceans expertise. Dalhousie Oceans Week brings leaders in government, science, industry and research, along with the public, to share knowledge and build energy as we work together to transform “Canada’s Ocean Playground” into Canada’s ocean powerhouse.
Dalhousie Oceans Week is hosted by Dalhousie University, an established world-leader in oceans research, development and innovation. Through many initiatives, Dalhousie is helping translate Nova Scotian research into economic opportunity and environmental solutions.

World Oceans Day – June 8
Dalhousie Oceans Week coincides with United Nations World Oceans Day on June 8. The concept of a global day to celebrate our oceans was first proposed in 1992 by the Government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. In December 2008, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution formally recognizing World Oceans Day on June 8. The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network help to promote and coordinate World Oceans Day events worldwide with aquariums, zoos, museums, conservation organizations, universities, schools, and businesses.
