Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) Program

The USRA program supports more than 3,000 students annually and is administered jointly by Canada’s three research granting agencies: the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Applications for the USRA program must be completed and submitted to the Canadian institution where you wish to hold the award through NSERC’s online system. Selected applications are submitted to NSERC by institutions. No USRA applications may be submitted directly to the agencies. The value of the award is $6,000 plus host institution contribution. Please contact your Faculty is you are interested in applying for a USRA award and see the following link for more information.

Special note: USRA Supplement: Canadian Forest Sector Workforce Diversity Undergraduate Supplement Program

From Spring 2020 to Winter 2023, NSERC in partnership with Natural Resources Canada Canadian Forest Service (NRCan – CFS), will run a new supplement program to the Undergraduate Student Research Awards. Up to thirty (30) awards per year will be offered nationwide in each of the 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2022-23 competitions. This additional supplement has a value of $5,000. Click here for more information.

NSERC will select candidates and will directly offer the supplement to selected USRA holders and the entire supplemental award will awarded to the student in full. In order to accept the supplement, award holders will have to accept the supplement’s Terms and Conditions.
