Student Research Poster Competition

The Offshore Energy Research Association (OERA) is pleased to announce the student poster presentation segment of the Nova Scotia Energy R&D Conference is back as one of the highlights of this two day international event.

OERA in partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Energy will be hosting the 7th bi-annual Nova Scotia Energy R&D Conference on May 25 & 26, 2016 at St. Francis Xavier University in beautiful Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

The call for research poster presentations is open to students, faculty and researchers conducting studies in offshore/onshore oil & gas, marine renewable energy, environment or alternative energy & sustainability.  The audience for the Conference is expected to be a mix of academic, government and industry energy researchers.  Posters will be on display for all Conference delegates to view over the full two days of the Conference.

Call for Research Posters

This Call for Research Posters is open to students, faculty and researchers conducting studies in Offshore/Onshore Oil & Gas, Marine Renewable Energy, Environment or Alternative Energy & Sustainability.

While all research posters will be on display, only student posters will be reviewed by a panel of judges and included in the competition. Students will be asked to give a 2 to 3 minute presentation on their research on the evening of May 25st between 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and may be asked questions by the judges. 

A $500 prize will be awarded for the best student research poster in each of the following categories:

  • Offshore/Onshore Oil & Gas (For example, geoscience, engineering, safety, carbon capture, data processing, etc.)
  • Marine Renewable Energy (For example, tidal, wave, and offshore wind)
  • Environment (For example, renewables and petroleum related strategic environmental assessments, environmental effects of exploration, etc.)
  • Alternative Energy & Sustainability (For example, onshore wind, solar, biomass, biofuels, hydrogen, smart grid technology, carbon capture, renewables storage, etc.)

Deadline for abstract submission:  Friday, March 18th, 2016

Your abstract will be reviewed by a panel and you will be advised if the poster is approved for the poster presentation. Abstracts should be no longer than one page and should include a title, your name, academic affiliation, research advisor, and a brief overview of your research and the category into which it best fits (please see categories above). If you are unsure of the category, enter the category which you feel is most appropriate.  We will ensure that you are in the correct category when abstracts are reviewed.

Student Accommodation Stipend & Conference Registration

Students who participate in the Conference through presentation of a poster will not be charged a registration fee and an accommodation stipend (to be used at the dormitory at St. Francis Xavier University) will be provided for the evening of May 25th.  Please note, you will still need to complete the Conference registration.  Conference registration can be found on the Conference website. Student presenters must register by April 29, 2016.
