Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program (CCHCSP)

Posted by Alana Milner on March 23, 2015 in Announcements

Sent on behalf of Christine Chambers:

Some of you may be familiar with the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program (CCHCSP), a program based out of Sick Kids that provides support for highly qualified child health clinician candidates to develop knowledge and skills for a career as an independent scientist in child health research. Trainees engage in research training and a core curriculum in one of the participating Child Health Research Training Centres of the CCHCSP. Various funding opportunities are available including predoctoral awards, postdoctoral awards, and career development awards for new faculty.

The IWK/Dal is fortunate to be a one of the core training sites in the CCHCSP program. Dr. Bob Bortolussi was the former site lead for IWK/Dal (and one of the founding members of CCHSCP). The program has not had a strong presence at the IWK/Dal since Bob stepped down off this role . . . but that is about to change!

Beginning June 1st, I am very happy to be taking over as the site lead for IWK/Dalhousie for the CCHCSP program. I am very much looking forward to building up the CCHSCP program at Dal/IWK so that more child health clinician-scientists (in training and in their early career stages) can benefit from this program.

But I need your help! I would be very grateful if you could please provide me the names and emails of individuals at the IWK in ANY DISCIPLINE (medicine, nursing, psychology, PT, OT, speech/languatg, pharmacy, etc.) who you know are a)currently engaged in graduate training in child health(completing either a masters, PhD, or a postdoc) b)considering pursuing such training. I would like to reach out to them to determine their needs and how CCHSCP might be able to support them.

Also, I would appreciate the names and emails of c) any new/early career clinician-scientists (in the first 5 years of their position, again in ANY DISCIPLINE) who are doing work in the area of child health, who might also be interested in benefitting or contributing to this program.

Moreover, because of our role as core training site for CCHSCP, we have been given 6 free registration spots at this year’s CCHCSP’s annual national meeting June 5-7. The program looks fantastic with sessions on grant writing, how to work more productively, mentoring, getting a job, etc. While the location of the meeting isn’t terrible exotic (it’s here in Halifax!), it is convenient! I will offer these spots to individuals whose names I am provided.

More updates on the CCHCSP program will follow comes June, but I appreciate your assistance in helping me reach out to individuals who might benefit from the program and attending the CCHCSP annual meeting in June.

Many thanks
Christine
