Benefits Info for Retiring Employees
Information for employees retiring from Dalhousie
Introduction
This information outlines the insured benefit conversion privileges, and other privileges, you may receive as a retiree. Some insurance conversion privileges are available only because of your prior membership in one of the university’s insured benefits programs.
Membership in the retirees' health plan is only possible if you have a prior membership in the Dalhousie group plan. Medavie Blue Cross would not underwrite retirees as a group without the affiliation to the University’s plan. Your group life coverage can be converted to an individual policy without the usual requirement to provide evidence of health.
Additionally, there are certain benefits provisions or membership privileges that are extended to former full-time and part-time employees who were members of the university’s employee groups immediately prior to retirement (e.g., tuition waiver, library privileges, University Club membership). Eligibility and entitlement will be as specified in the applicable collective agreement or policy handbook at the date of retirement.
If you are planning to work for the university on a full- or part-time basis and you are receiving Canada Pension Plan (CPP) benefits you will need to provide Human Resources with a copy of correspondence stating that you are in receipt of CPP in order for the CPP deduction to be stopped.
You are also encouraged to review information about the Association of Dalhousie Retirees and Pensioners. New members are most welcome.
We hope you will find this information useful, and we wish you well in both your retirement and your continuing affiliation with Dalhousie.
