Office of the Ombudsperson

Working for fairness within our campus community

The Office of the Ombudsperson ensures that members of the Dalhousie community receive fair and equitable treatment. Our office is an ideal place to start if you’re unclear about the particular nature of your complaint or not sure where to go for help. Our service is available to any member of the Dalhousie community—students, staff, or faculty.

What we do for you

We are advisors, mediators, and investigators. We recommend options and discuss solutions. We have access to relevant information, files, and people across campus, but we’re not decision makers. We have no formal or binding authority; however, we consider all sides of a question in an impartial manner to try and find resolution. When you come to us with a question or complaint, we ensure the utmost in confidentiality.

We investigate and make inquiries on your behalf

  • listen carefully, and ask questions to help clarify concerns in a confidential manner
  • gather and examine all of the relevant facts of the case

We guide you through the preparation of an articulate and informative case to help the decision-maker come to a fair resolution.

  • advise you how to access appropriate decision-makers
  • refer you to another appropriate agency if necessary
  • inform you of relevant academic regulations or appeals procedures

We explore options with you, regardless of the outcome of the case.

  • attend meetings and formal hearings with you and other parties
  • mediate or negotiate with you and other parties

Appeal process

If, after hearing our opinion and considering the options, you wish to prepare a formal appeal, we’ll refer you to the Student Advocacy Service.
