Future studies

Because you can combine Dal's creative writing program with many other degree programs, you have plenty of choices for future study. If you choose to do a Bachelor of Arts (BA) with a double major or combined honours with another primary subject area in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, you could go on to do a Master of Arts (MA) in that subject.

For example, if you’re studying English and creative writing, you could do an MA in English. If you’re studying history with creative writing, you could do an MA in History.

But you could also pursue further studies in creative writing. Some universities now offer an MA in English and Creative Writing, for which you would produce a body of work in prose or poetry instead of the traditional academic thesis.

Many other universities offer a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing. Both of these programs require a portfolio of your writing as part of the application—but after taking workshops in Dal’s creative writing program, you’ll have several works of prose or poetry to include.

Here are some of the options for future study after completing a BA in Creative Writing:

  • Master of Arts (MA)
  • Master of Fine Arts (MFA in Creative Writing)
  • PhD
  • a certificate in publishing or editing
