Career opportunities

What can you do with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Creative Writing while you wait for your novel's royalty cheques to come rolling in?

Workshops in Dal's creative writing program will teach you much more than how to develop well-rounded characters or how to build suspense. You'll learn skills that will prepare you for any job requiring creative thinking and problem solving. You’ll be able to think on your feet and with your pen, creating tag lines for marketing campaigns or composing clear and compelling text for websites. You could end up teaching English composition or English as a second language (ESL) in a foreign country, or leading a writing workshop in a local community centre. The bottom line: you'll be prepared for any type of work that requires the ability to communicate clearly in writing.

Here are just a few of the careers paths you might follow with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Creative Writing:

  • magazine writer
  • playwright
  • film script writer
  • Web writer/editor
  • novelist
  • editor in the publishing industry
  • ESL teacher
  • writing instructor

Now an instructor in Dal's creative writing program, Shashi Bhat was an English major and doing pre-med at Cornell University a couple of years ago. Find out why she dropped out of pre-med to pursue creative writing—and why she loves teaching creative writing workshops at Dal.

"I realized I was enjoying writing my statement of purpose for the application much more than I was expecting to enjoy med school."
