World-Class Research

An international reputation

Dalhousie is Atlantic Canada’s leading research university, attracting more than $132 million in research grants and awards each year. Many Dalhousie researchers are nationally and internationally recognized for their work, whether it’s groundbreaking, thought-provoking or just plain cool.

More than any other university in the region, Dalhousie is home to 52 Canada Research Chairs. Chairholders advance the frontiers of knowledge in their fields, not only through their own work, but also by teaching and supervising students and coordinating the work of other researchers. Research ranges from fundamental philosophical questioning concerning the development of new health technologies to lab research on proteins in nerve cells that helps to understand and advance nervous system repair.

Dalhousie consistently ranks as one of the top Canadian institutions in The Scientist’s “Best Places to Work in Academia.” Dalhousie also ranks highly in The Scientist's list of the best non-commercial scientific institutes to work at in Canada, winning the category outright in 2006.
