Boost to oceans research in Atlantic Canada

Oceans researchers and students will benefit from the addition of the Oceans Excellence Centre, a 68,000 sq. ft. complex to be added to the west end of the Life Sciences Centre, connected by an atrium with the oceanography wing.

Building research capacity

Doug Wallace, Dalhousie’s new Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Ocean Science and Technology, and his lab group will be the building’s major tenant. There will also be:

  • Offices and labs for the Ocean Tracking Network
  • Offices of Halifax Marine Research Institute
  • Expansion of Aquatron tank capacity
  • Two floors of shelled space for future research expansion

Unique feature of the OEC will aid in research

Included in the new building will be a unique container bay that will hold several portable labs constructed from standard 20-foot shipping containers. This will allow Dr. Doug Wallace, Dalhousie’s new Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Ocean Science and Technology, and his team to work in the same labs out at sea as they do when they’re back on shore.
