The following represents questions routinely asked in the past. Should new ones surface, we will add them to the list.
| 1. Q: Can we send more than one team from our school? | |
| A: Sorry. Only one team is permitted per Atlantic Canadian high school. | |
| 2. Q: How do we choose who is to be on the school’s one team? | |
|
A: Some schools already have a “Reach for the Top” style competition and send the winning team. If you have more than one team, you might hold an internal competition using the practice quizzes in our online learning system called BLS. You can access BLS once you register your school’s participation. Practice quizzes in the BLS space provide a feel for taking an online quiz and are the same format as the opening round. There’s also a discussion board in the competition space. Once several schools are registered, you could ask for advice from others.
| 3. Q: How do we register? | |
|
A: E-mail reach4@dal.ca and provide your school’s name, phone number, and the teacher advisor/coach. We do not require the advisor/coach to attend the event but since only one team is accepted per school, the registration must be made by a school employee. If you know them, the names of all students on the team. We must have the names of team members two weeks prior to the competition so we can prepare name badges and other personalized items.
| 4. Q: How do we get the team ready? | |
| A: Get them on BLS to learn how to use it and try the sample questions. Sample questions represent format but not the full range of kinds of questions that will be part of Reach for Dalhousie. People from all around Dalhousie, representing many academic fields, have contributed questions. You can also create your own competitions, and have students practice answering as a team. You’ll discover who is strongest in various types of questions. Students can then defer to their strongest team member with questions on, for example, math or geography, if team members have different responses to a question. | |
| 5. Q: Do we have to send a chaperone? Does the chaperone have to be a teacher? | |
|
A: If your team is visiting Dalhousie for the day, adult accompaniment is not required but a parent may want to come along as chauffeur and coach.
| 6. Q: What kinds of questions will be used? | |
|
A: The categories last year were: Archives (Dalhousie questions), Art, Biology, Chemistry, Classics, Computers, Engineering, English, General (a grab-bag category), Geography, History, Languages, Law, Math, Medicine, Music, Nursing, Pharmacy, Philosophy, Physics, Physiology, Political Science, Pop Culture, Psychology, Religion, Sociology and Anthropology, Sports, Theatre, Tropes. Each contest will include a selection of questions, using many different categories. Some categories might have more than one question on a given quiz (e.g. English or Biology), some might have one or none (e.g. Archives or Tropes or Nursing). All questions will be multiple choice. Some will test knowledge, plain and simple. Example Which of the countries below is in the western hemisphere? Remember that a multiple choice math question may also call for the application of skill.
